UNLABELED – Camouflage Against the Machines

In collaboration with Dentsu Lab Tokyo, a textile label “UNLABELED” has been launched to develop camouflage patterns that protect us from the upcoming AI-based surveillance society. We were in charge of the development of the camouflage pattern generation system, applying technology that triggers AI misrecognition by adding specific patterns to images.

Focusing on the weakness of AI's ability to detect information such as gender, age, and appearance from images and videos, we generated specific patterns using a method called Adversarial Patch, which makes AI more susceptible to misrecognition. Wearing a generated camouflage pattern can reduce the probability of being recognized as a “human” by image recognition AI classifiers.

As part of one of Japan's largest design and art festivals, ”DESIGNART TOKYO 2021” held at Shibuya PARCO in Tokyo in October 2021, we exhibited and sold hoodies and tote bags utilizing this camouflage pattern.

While an AI-based surveillance society can bring safety and convenience, it can also lead to issues related to privacy and personal information. By reinterpreting camouflage, which was originally developed to hide on the battlefield, to fit modern society, it provides an opportunity to reconsider the society we live in.
